Hurricane season ends quietly, but forecast is for more high-impact storms in coming years.
The Atlantic Hurricane season officially ended on December 1st with no named storms hitting the US with any force. Although incidents were below the season-average, it was still a close call. According to the Insurance Information Institute, there were 11 tropical storms and four hurricanes during the 2015 season with two of the four hurricanes becoming major storms at their respective peaks. Had any of these hurricanes hit the US with any force, the institute says that they could have been devastating. The Insurance Information Institute notes that 5 of the 10 costliest hurricanes in US history, as defined by insured losses, have occurred over the past decade. The Insurance Information Institute's report adds to others in the industry that have warned against complacency in the coming years as there will be more high-impact hurricanes in future seasons.
